This is the second edition of our Artist in Residence series, in which we give different creatives the possibility to work in our Vaudeville Theatre for a day. We ask them to hang around, create and share their vision, insights and stories about who they are and what they make. This time, the Theatre was given to Charlotte Greeven:
Welcome to The Loft, please introduce yourself.
My name is Charlotte Greeven, I work as a portrait painter, illustrator and fashion/costume designer. I studied Fashion Design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, The Hague.
What materials do you usually work with and what did you bring today?
All kinds, from pencils to paint to fabrics to beads. It depends on the work, today I worked on a costume design project I’m doing for a beautiful stop-motion animation movie called Finity Calling, by Jasper Kuipers.
Which artist or designer is a source of inspiration for you?
I get inspired by the Decadence era, where artists such as Oscar Wilde, Egon Schiele, and Aubrey Beardsley were constantly looking for the thin line between beauty and decay. Another source of inspiration comes from movies: The Silence of The Lambs, Old Boy, Orfeo Negro, and works from Wes Anderson, Tim Burton, Alfred Hitchcock, The Coen Brothers, Stanley Kubrick and Ghibli Studios. Music is also a great source of inspiration. Lately I’m into Vivaldi, I love to make a big research about big artists from the past. I listen to old and contemporary music from all over the world and I also get inspired by electronic music parties.
If you could invent a name for an art movement you belong to, what would it be?
What kind of work do you usually make and how was it different today?
I work in different disciplines, today wasn’t any different. For my portrait and illustration work I usually use classic analog techniques like pencil drawing, aquarel, soft pastels, collage and painting. I design and create textiles, and use them as analog or digital collage material. For my fashion design and costume work I do various things. Today I worked on the costume project, so I worked on tiny beaded extravagant outfits.
