Foreign Objects

Foreign Objects is a group of creatives that has travelled together to collect some of the most interesting and rare Berber carpets from the Riff and Atlas mountains of Morocco. They have established their trade in Helsinki and Amsterdam and are always looking for novel ways of sharing their collection.

Foreign Objects introduces a selection of vintage and contemporary Berber carpets made from wool. These carpets offer an unusual combination of minimalism, handmade detail and inventive asymmetry that continues to allure people’s imagination.

Berber carpets are prized and collected the world over. From early, iconic modernist architects like Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto, to a new generation of architects and interior designers fascinated by these plush piles of wool.

These carpets are handmade by Berber women from various cooperatives and households throughout northern and central Morocco. The patterns woven into these carpets are a combination of tribal traditions, improvisation and personal expression.

Much more than mere decor for the house — nomadic tribes have used these carpets to provide both comfort and physical protection from natural elements, while their talismanic designs deflected evil and stimulated fertility.
