Mantis BS1B

Bernard Schottlander created Mantis in 1951, intrigued and inspired by the works of Alexander Calder. He devised a series of counterweights, combined with strong and flexible metal bars made from aluminum (using spinning and chasing techniques known to metalworkers).

Schottlander brought his sculptor’s eye to create a helix of movement, in which the symmetrical and asymmetrical are in opposition. Movement is intrinsic to all of Schottlander’s work. The collection is a poetic eternal duel between balance and imbalance, appearing to defy the laws of gravity.
